Each day begins with a demo pertaining to the day’s project such as; exploring eyes and faces in an unconventional way; focus on a single figure with an obscure background; and intertwine a group of people with their background elements. Artists receive plenty of personal attention and painting time.

jmcguire Jeannie McGuire, a Pittsburgh-based watercolor artist, strives to invoke individual interpretation through her artwork, which impressively utilizes a free application of paint and stylistic forms of expression. Narratives are communicated in such works as “Kenneth,” the American Watercolor Society’s 144th Gold Medal of Honor selection. McGuire uses her own photography, acquired snapshots and life drawings to spark her creativity. Her work has been described as a brilliant combination of emotion, movement, and artistry that has been expanded upon from her days as a commercial graphic designer and photographer. Watercolor Batik on Rice Paper Workshop

Instructor: Gail Watson

Interested? Register below for the Wait List to be notified when next class is scheduled

Dates: TBD
Days / Time: TBD

Length of Class: 2 Days / 6 Hours each Day (Previous)

Workshop Fee: OCAF Members - $125.00 / Non-members - $135.00

Materials List: Instructor provides Giniwashi rice paper, electric skillet with paraffin wax, brushes
for waxing,  iron, newspaper. Student supply list will be emailed to registered students.

Workshop Description: Watercolor Batik is the process of using hot wax as a resist. If you have ever used masking fluid, the wax is used for the same purpose to preserve the painting layers. We’ll work from light to dark, preserving each layer with wax. At the end of the process, the entire painting will have a layer of wax and you will iron off the wax between newspapers to reveal the finished product. This is always the exciting part of the process; to see what lies beneath all the layers. You will work from your own drawing. Any subject matter will work, but it’s best to start with a simple design with a good variety of values.

Gail Watson launched her career as an artist by taking classes from Dianne Mize in Clarkesville. She then began taking monthly workshops to advance her watercolor skills by learning many techniques from accomplished artists in the Atlanta area.

Her passion is painting nature using rich colors and combining the many techniques she has learned. Her favorite subjects are birds, wildlife, flowers, horses, and scenes from her travels. She uses her own photographs as a reference for her paintings, sometimes using multiple photographs for a pleasing composition.  She continues to take watercolor workshops to assure her paintings will be exciting and on the cutting edge of watercolor artistry.

She is the current president of the Currahee Artist’s Guild, a signature member of the Georgia Watercolor Society, a member of North Georgia Artist’s Guild, the Oconee Cultural Arts Foundation, the Helen Arts and Heritage Center and the Sautee Nacoochee Art Center. Her work has been accepted into numerous juried shows in Georgia and South Carolina.
